They Say Timing is Everything

They tell you that calling names, chasing and poking fun.

Is really just a sign that boys like you when they’re young.

He did all that and more, just to name a few.

But he always held a sweet spot and my like for him soon grew.

We got close and teenage hearts thought that maybe there was more.

Maybe I liked him this time just a bit more than before.

But every time that feeling came, he was taken, spoken for.

My interest waned and I moved on at the sound of the closing door.

Something was always in our way, we never got it timed.

His dad walked in, another guy, we never were aligned.

We stayed connected over the years and kept up this little game.

We’d find our way back to each other, neither one of us to blame.

One year I remember driving hours to visit, just him and me.

I walked in and hugged him and he stared, “Hey, this is Ashley.”

He tore my heart to pieces. Why?! Why can’t we figure this out?

This cat and mouse is bullshit is all I wanted to shout.

It almost felt like vengeance, getting even, getting back.

You hurt me then I’ll hurt you, ’til we get this train on track.

But I could never let him go, never leave it, say good bye.

There was something always pulling me, an invisible tie.

Far down the road, this might be it, and then he came to me.

We tried our best, it just wasn’t there. It was never meant to be.

Back and forth and back again and it was finally the end.

We were never supposed to be lovers, but he was always my best friend.

Sometimes we have people that hold a special place.

And sometimes we get it wrong and it’s for a different space.

I still check in, still reach out, even though we are apart.

Because he always has and always will be special to my heart.
